In recent years, trains to experience time away from your ordinary days have been attracting a lot of attention.
The Shinkansen bullet train is the most famous train in Japan, but there are also many sightseeing trains in Japan. Sightseeing trains allow passengers to enjoy the extraordinary experience of traveling while admiring the spectacular scenery from the windows of the train. From resort trains with gorgeous exteriors and elaborate interiors to sleeper expresses, there are trains running all over the Japanese archipelago that have been thoughtfully designed.
In this article, we will introduce the “Koeno: Shu*Kura," a train based on the concept of experiencing sake, the pride of Niigata Prefecture.
The name “Koeno: Shu*Kura” was inspired by the image of Echigo's sake breweries and rich nature. (Shu meaning Sake, the asterisk representing a rice grain/snow flake/flowers, and Kura meaning brewery) In addition to snacks made from local ingredients, a sake tasting corner has been set up in the train, where passengers can enjoy any of the five different brands of carefully selected local sake from Niigata Prefecture at any given time.
An original menu of Niigata's “sake and food” is available for each season, allowing you to enjoy seasonal ingredients. It is a great concept for fans of sake.
If you are sake-enthusiast, this may be something you could try when going to Niigata!
Shu*Kura operates only as round trip experiences from Joetsu Myoko to three different locations.
